Job Summary

Reporting to the Technical Systems Manager the Infrastructure DBA is responsible for the design, implementation and management of highly scalable database systems across multiple public and private cloud infrastructures.

 

The person in this role will be an experienced DBA with experience of creating and running large scale databases to support distributed web applications. Experience with working with multiple cloud infrastructure providers, managing and building highly available systems, automation and a proficiency in SQL are all a must.

As a successful candidate you will be working in the Service Operations Team in the IRIS Group Engineering Division. You will help deliver software for the whole of the IRIS Software Group, including the HCM and Accountancy divisions.

 

You will use your extensive experience building and maintaining resilient, secure and scalable architectures to help define and grow the IRIS cloud product suite and drive the business forward.

 

You will work closely with the DevOps specialists to ensure builds and deploys are delivered seamlessly to the end customer via automation and continuous delivery, ensuring minimal downtime and disruption to our customers.

 

You will develop and maintain best practice, working with key stakeholders to ensure security, business continuity and customer satisfaction are always the prime focus.

 

Applying your clear and articulate communication skills, you will keep stakeholders at all levels informed of critical decisions, problems and statuses of any ongoing projects.

 

You will be always be looking for infrastructure improvements, either to increase security, lower costs, improve stability or drive efficiencies. You should be entirely vendor and product agnostic, and always seek to use best-of-breed technologies, regardless of personal preference.

Main responsibilities 

  • Operational maintenance of all databases, responding to monitoring and customer issues as required.

  • Building and maintaining excellent relationships with support and development, and enabling production customer issues to be diagnosed and resolved quickly and efficiently.

  • Assisting in the regular delivery of updated the latest software builds to the production environment.

  • Managing and collaborating with external partners to build an innovative, best-of-breed platform on which to deliver cloud products.

  • Architecting, building and maintaining new resilient, secure and cost effective systems.

  • Expanding, maintaining and automating the infrastructure configuration management system through the extensive use of scripts and tooling to enable seamless delivery and management of the databases.

  • Cultivate relationships with IT management and technical teams across IRIS.

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of the organization's infrastructure architecture.

  • Have a security focused approach to all database and associated infrastructure work and an awareness of the effect of agile change management on the security of the platforms.

  • Constant awareness of industry trends and improvements, ensuring colleagues are briefed on potential infrastructure and database improvement opportunities though personal R&D projects.

  • Communication of infrastructure issues across the organisation.

  • Gain organizational commitment for cloud platform architecture and broader cloud infrastructure initiatives.

  • Ensuring databases are backed up and restorable with a viable disaster recovery plan in place at all times.

  • Capacity planning for overall database and individual application objects.

  • Preparation and automation of regular and ad-hoc management information reports.

  • Providing on-call support for production systems.

  • Maintaining the integrity and security of all customer data.

  •  Training and mentoring of other staff.

Qualifications

Degree qualified with a computer science, math or engineering background or equivalent industry experience.

 

Experience

  • Required:

    • 3 years of experience as a SQL Server DBA in a production environment.
    • Working with databases in a tiered application environment using a Microsoft .NET front end.
    • Experience of alternative NoSQL and Open Source technologies.
    • Good Windows/Linux/general networking skills.
    • Production experience of Failover Clustering and Always On Availability Groups.
    • Experience of Microsoft Azure, specifically SQL Databases on Azure.
    • Strong TSQL skills.

     

    Beneficial:

     

    • Working in a Internet software delivery environment (e.g. SaaS, eCommerce, managed services).
    • Working in an Agile software environment with CI/CD and associated systems (Bamboo, Hudson, Jenkins, Octopus Deploy, Chef etc.).
    • Basic scripting ability in either Python, PowerShell or Bourne shell.
