Job Summary

 As the successful candidate, you will be working within the Service Operations function which delivers web-based software to small, medium and large UK enterprises. 

You will use your extensive experience to build and maintain resilient, secure and scalable architectures to help define and grow the IRIS Service Operations team and drive the business forward.

You will work closely with the Production and Development Operations teams to ensure builds and deploys are delivered seamlessly to the end customer, whether they are internal or external, and to ensure continuous service improvement through automation and improved tooling. You will develop and maintain best practice, working with key stakeholders to ensure security, business continuity and customer satisfaction are always the prime focus.

Applying your clear and articulate communication skills, you will keep stakeholders at all levels informed of critical decisions, problems and statuses of any ongoing projects.

You will always be looking for infrastructure, application and process improvements, to increase security, lower costs, improve stability or drive efficiencies. You should be entirely vendor and product agnostic, and always seek to use best-of-breed technologies, regardless of personal preference.

Main Responsibilities

  • 24 x 7 operational maintenance of all platforms and services, responding to monitoring and customer issues as required alongside the Production Operations team.
  • Assisting in the automated delivery of the latest software builds to the production and development environments.
  • Managing and collaborating with external partners to build an innovative, best-of-breed platform on which to deliver cloud products.
  • Designing, building and maintaining resilient, secure and cost effective systems, networks and services.
  • Expanding, maintaining and automating the infrastructure configuration management system through the extensive use of scripts and tooling.
  • Cultivate relationships with IT management and technical teams across IRIS.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of the organisation's infrastructure architecture.
  • Have a security-focused approach to all work and an awareness of the effect of agile change management on the security of the platforms.
  • Be constantly aware of industry trends and improvements.
  • Successfully communicate infrastructure issues and challenges across the organisation.
  • Gain organisational commitment for cloud platform architecture and broader cloud infrastructure initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in a computer science, math or engineering discipline or equivalent industry experience.

Development Experience

Essential

  • In-depth scripting knowledge of either Python, PowerShell or Bourne shell
  • Have Infrastructure as Code experience.
  • Extensive system and network administration experience on Windows Server and Linux operating systems.
  • Experience in building on IaaS cloud platforms, particularly using AWS, Azure, RackSpace or OpenStack.
  • Excellent TCP/IP knowledge and associated protocols such as DNS, HTTP, SMTP, etc.
  • Build and configuration management systems using Puppet, Chef, SaltStack, Ansible, etc.
  • Large-scale monitoring systems such as Nagios, Zabbix, OpenNMS, Zenoss, etc.

Advantageous

  • Working in an Internet software delivery environment (e.g. SaaS, eCommerce, managed services).
  • Experience of containerization, particularly Docker and self-healing architectures
  • Working in an Agile software environment with CI/CD and associated systems (Bamboo, Hudson, Jenkins, Git, etc.).
  • Relational (SQL) and NoSQL Databases
