How will auto enrolment affect the NHS?

There has been some confusion within the NHS when it comes to auto enrolment, with many people thinking the NHS will not be affected by the change, due to the NHS Pension Scheme. This is untrue however, and GP practices across the country need to be preparing to ensure they will be compliant with the change.

A spokesperson from NHS Employers said: “The automatic enrolment duties apply to workers (for example bank and agency staff, locum doctors and some freelance workers) and not just employees.

Employers need to assess the worker status and categorise workers as eligible jobholder, non-eligible jobholder and entitled worker. Those workers that meet the age, earnings and worker requirements must be automatically enrolled. The employer must not put everyone back into the NHS Pension scheme or this may lead to a claim for an unlawful deduction.

If workers are restricted from joining or paying further contributions to NHSPS then these workers will need to be automatically enrolled (or allowed to opt in or join) an alternative pension scheme that has been set up by the employer. Each employer must have procure and choose a new pension provider (in addition to NHSPS) in advance of their staging date.”

GP practices should be following the same steps as businesses to prepare for auto enrolment. To ensure you have enough time to get ready, you should start preparing 18 months prior to your staging date.

To help you get ready, IRIS is holding Understanding Automatic Enrolment training seminars. On the course you will be given an overview of the government’s workplace pension reform and auto enrolment, the steps you need to take to prepare and how IRIS GP software can help you guarantee compliance.

Don’t just take our word for it though, 88% of the GP practices who have attended one of these courses have said they would recommend them to other practices.
