Receiving error message ‘Failed to retrieve client obligations due to client/agent not being authorised when selecting client in VAT Filer
Resolution
  •  The agent credentials may need resetting – To reset the agent credentials(for IRIS accountancy suite):
    1. Ensure VAT filer is open with the client selected.
    2. Go to setup | highlight the agent that needs to be reset
    3. Select Reset agent credentials | OK to confirm
    4. Select Client Refresh on the main VAT Filer screen
    5. The ‘IRIS requires authorisation from HMRC’ screen should then appear asking ‘authority to interact with HMRC on your behalf(screenshot below).
    6. The user should then run through the 4 steps mentioned in the screenshot.
  • Check the following links to ensure you have signed up correctly
    • HMRC’s 6 step breakdown for the process for Agents completing VAT returns on behalf of clients(In most cases step 5 has not been done) – https://www.gov.uk/guidance/making-tax-digital-for-vat-as-an-agent-step-by-step
    • HMRC’s instructions for the process businesses need to take to complete their own VAT return to comply with MTD(In most cases the business has not been signed up for MTD – https://www.gov.uk/guidance/making-tax-digital-for-vat
  • If all of the above does not remove the error then please contact HMRC.
