Problem
IRIS Business Tax- System XML Exception, Root Element is missing OR Fatal Error 2001
Resolution
NOTE: ‘System XML, Root Element is missing’ can be a generic warning of either a PDF is too large, an address/postcode field entry is too large etc.
These two error messages XML or Fatal Error 2001 occur when you are trying to attach an optional PDF which is too large.
The maximum restriction for attaching a PDF is 2MB (2000KB) and greater than this will cause the Electronic Tax return to be aborted. You will need to manually reduce the size of the PDF, then regenerate and reattach the new PDF.
If you have not attached any PDFs:
- Regenerate the IXBRL from Accounts production
- Regenerate the CT600 and attach the IXBRL and Tax comp and submit again
- If that fails then go to Help and About and ensure you are on the latest IRIS version and redo steps 1 and 2 again.
- if that Fails again – Check if you have ‘Cross border payment entries’ and check if the Postcode is over 8 characters – if yes then edit the number down to 8 as there is a HMRC limit on the characters.
- If you have no cross border entries then check all the address fields(which require address/postcode etc) as you may have a entry which is over a HMRC limit.
