I need to Exclude ports within my windows firewall to allow SQL Server to work, which ports do I need to exclude?
Resolution
Following the steps below may help to establish which ports need to be excluded within Windows Firewall.
It is important to note that depending on the type of installation that was performed the TCP Port you need to exclude within the Windows Firewall may be different.
For Default Instances of SQL
When a default instance of SQL Server has been installed, ie (MSSQLSERVER), SQL Server uses TCP Port 1433 for communication with applications. Please refer to KB IAS-6220 for further details.
For Named Instances of SQL
When a named instance of SQL Server has been installed, ie (IRISPRACTICE), then SQL Server usually assigns a port number dynamically. To establish the TCP Port being used by the named instance SQL Server previously installed please refer to KB IAS-6218
If SQL Server is using a TCP Port different to the default please refer to KB IAS-6221 for further details.
If SQL Server is using a Dymanic TCP then please refer to KB IAS-6183 and KB IAS-6184 for more details.
SQL Server uses UDP Port 1434 for communication with applications. Please refer to KB IAS-6219 for details on how to set exclusions.
