Problem

Resolution

Personal Tax MTD quarters will only operate if these steps below are followed and completed

1.An ‘ASA login’ has been created on the HMRC site

2. Using your ASA login on the HMRC site- you have moved/registered your PT clients as MTD

3. In PT- Load a MTD client – Admin – Edit Tax return dates – Registered for MTD box – ensure there is a date entry saved here. This MTD date triggers the PT system to link your client to the HMRC system.

4. In PT – Setup – Authorised Agents: Check if there is a row called ‘Self Assessment’ (the example image below has it successfully set up). If there is a entry then you could already have a ASA login setup (then go straight to step 9 and retrieve the quarters). If not, then this row will be missing and MTD will not work, continue to step 5.

If you have 2+ ‘Self Assessment’ rows showing? Check at the top if its set to ‘Individual or Practice’ and then speak to your team on who set up which login and the reason why these are setup. If these unrecognised rows should not be there -you will need to decide whether to reset them all so they are deleted and continue the steps below.

Warning: DO NOT click the ‘Agent services account sign up’ button here – this does not link your ASA to HMRC.

5. If Step 4) Auth Agents has no ‘Self Assessment’ row, close it and go to the Clients Trade or Property section.

If a Trade – Open the relevant period, go to Period Settings and click ‘Retrieve periods from HMRC’ – the HMRC login screen will show. If you get ‘matching resource not found’ go to step 8 and 9.

If a Property â€“ On the leftside of PT, UK Property and ‘UK Other Property summary’, go to Period Settings and click ‘Retrieve periods from HMRC’ – the HMRC login screen will show. If you get ‘matching resource not found’ go to step 8 and 9.

6. The HMRC login will appear and sign in with your ‘ASA login’ and answer the security questions about yourself (not your PT clients details)

7. On the ‘Sign in using Gov Gateway’ screen below – there is a known random issue where you cannot type in ID/password – wait a few minutes and or click everywhere else and it will then allow you to type again. The security questions are about you and not the PT client

8. Once it has confirmed your Identity etc and it closes – go to Auth agents screen and look for the ‘self assessment’ row, this means the link between PT and HMRC is working. If its still missing, then redo step 3 onwards.

Warning: DO NOT click the ‘Agent services account sign up’ button here – this does not link your ASA to HMRC.

9. Now attempt to retrieve the MTD quarters for the PT client and if you get ‘Matching resource not found’ – read this KB
