Problem

Resolution

  1. MTD Error ‘MATCHING RESOURCE NOT FOUND’
  2. MTD Error ‘RESOURCE_FORBIDDEN’

MATCHING RESOURCE NOT FOUND – When you access a clients trade/property and get a data retrieval error log with ‘Matching resource not found’. No quarterly obligation periods are listed under period settings. When you select ‘Retrieve periods from HMRC’ you get another data retrieval error.

This normally means 1) HMRC do not have quarter periods for the tax year/periods you are in and its actually needed next tax year OR 2) your HMRC setup has issues and/or your login in PT needs a reset.

  1. Check HMRC steps are completed: Do must ensure that the affected clients are moved into your ASA account and then registered for MTD and then the user has authorised the IRIS software using your HMRC ‘ASA’ credentials before retrieving the obligation periods.
  2. Add the next period if a trade: If you are trying to access eg 5th Apr 2025 periods but nothing shows. You need to manually add the next period eg 5th Apr 2026 or 2027 etc into PT – go to the very bottom of TPV, New and add the next period and try again. If nothing shows for the newly added period then again add the next period and check that too. See step 3 below to retrieve the quarters on each periods.
  3. If a Trade – Open the relevant period, go to Period Settings and click ‘Retrieve periods from HMRC’ – if they appear here, now check Making Tax digital, click sole trade, click the trade name and the periods should now be listed
  4. If a Property – On the left side of PT, UK Property and UK Other Property summary, go to Period Settings and click ‘Retrieve periods from HMRC’ – if they appear here, now check Making Tax digital, click Property, click the property name and the periods should now be listed. If they do not appear and get MATCHING RESOURCE NOT FOUND then log into your ASA account on the HMRC site to check which tax year they want the MTD to start for your client- and if its next tax year then the 4 quarters may not appear until later.
  5. Reset your credentials: If your client is correctly registered for MTD and you have used correct ASA login, added the next period and still get the error – please reset your login in PT. Go to Setup/Authorised Agents – your initials will show under a row named ‘SELF ASSESSMENT’, click on it and click ‘reset agent credentials’ and ok to warning. It will be deleted, Ok to exit this screen and go to retrieve the quarter periods, the HMRC screen will show to allow you to login with your ASA. There can be a delay of 24/48hrs for the HMRC side to pick up the login and show the quarters with no error.
  6. NOTE: There is a known HMRC issue since Mid 2025 where this affects random clients with the error, please contact HMRC support to check their side (Also ask they check your ASA login and the MTD clients moved into your ASA account and if the HMRC side only needs the data for the next tax year then thats why you get the warning as they do not require it in the current tax year but next tax year).

RESOURCE_FORBIDDEN

Reported in mid 2025. You have set up a client up for MTD, accessed the ‘Digital Tax Hub’ on IRIS PT, then completed the HMRC process of verifying ID for your Agent Services account. Once it has been authorised, you are now receiving the error RESOURCE_FORBIDDEN’ (The application is not subscribed to the API attempting to invoke) under PERIOD SETTINGS and no details coming from HMRC. This error is when accessing the end of year submission, (Note: The APIs have been updated in the next version of IRIS eg after version 25.1.4.42), however this area is NOT required for the ‘in year activity’ which you would be submitting for.

NOTE: If you are trying to access eg 5th Apr 2025 period details but get the errors then it does not apply for it. You need to manually add the next period eg 5th Apr 2026 into PT and it will now work and not get the error and show all the periods. So add the next set of periods into PT and try again.
