Problem
By Default SQL Server uses TCP Ports for communication with applications. If you are running an application that requires connectivity with the SQL Server, you must first establish which port SQL Server is listening on then enable this port in your windows firewall
Resolution
Following the steps below will enable a static port for SQL Server in your windows firewall.
To establish if a Dynamic or Static TCPIP Port is being used by the SQL Server please refer to KB IAS-6218
Click Start and then Click Run
Type Firewall.cpl and then Click OK
In the top left Click Advanced Settings
In Advanced Settings create new Inbound and Outbound Rules.
You will need to select Port | TCP |
In the Specific Local Ports, type the port number established above and then Allow the connection on the next screen. Apply to Domain ,Private, and Public
Type a name in the name box and then Click OK
