Problem

Agents are recieving the following message when completing their own business VAT submission "Failed to retrieve client obligations due to agent/client not being authorised" despite all steps being completed as required by HMRC as detailed in the following link. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/making-tax-digital-for-vat

Resolution

This can be due to the user using the agent authorisation in the accountant screen, instead of alternative accountant. User must change the accountant by going to Client – View – Accountant – select alternative accountant – View relevant accountant – tick ‘can act as agent’ If the ‘IRIS requires authorisation from HMRC’ reappears when going back into the client, then please re-authorise the software and for step 1. Sign into the government gateway using the business’s MTD VAT login details, not the agent’s.
