System Requirements

System Requirements

Before installing IRIS Software, please ensure that the systems you are using meet or exceed the minimum platform, hardware and software requirements described below.


Microsoft Windows EOL Support

Microsoft Office

Office 2007 reached the end of its support lifecycle in October 2017, meaning there are no new security updates, non-security updates, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft. IRIS has offered extended support for use of its products with Office 2007 but as we are now over 12 months past this date this extended support is being terminated. If you are using Office 2007 products and services we advise you to move to one of the supported Office versions as outlined in the system requirements section as soon as possible.


Microsoft SQL Server

On 9th of July 2019, SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 go out of Microsoft’s extended support. As a result; our IRIS products will no longer be supported with use of SQL Server 2008 (incl. R2) after our 2019 Spring release version 19.1 This means that while the IRIS product may continue to work using this version of SQL Server, they will no longer be tested in these environments and we will not be able to offer support to customers using them.

Microsoft Operating Systems 

  • On 14th January 2020 the following 3 operating systems go out of Microsoft’s extended support: Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2


As a result; our IRIS products will no longer be supported in these operating systems after our 2019 Autumn release version 19.3 This means the IRIS products will no longer be tested in these environments and we will not be able to offer support to customers using these operating systems. We strongly recommend that you update your operating system as soon as possible. 

Windows XP and Office 2003

Microsoft ended support for Windows XP and Office 2003 in April 2014, this was followed by Windows Server 2003 when support ended in July 2015.  From our Autumn 2017 release IRIS will no longer function on any workstation that is using Windows XP or any servers that are running Windows Server 2003.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008

Microsoft have announced that on 11th April 2017 Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 without SP2 will no longer be supported.  These announcements have resulted in IRIS ending support for these platforms. Full details can be found here.

Note: Microsoft SQL Server Express is only recommended for installations of up to six users.  

Express versions of SQL Server have a database size limit of 10GB.

IMPORTANT: Customers who have over 10 users MUST use either the Workgroup, Standard or Enterprise versions of SQL Server.

Hardware Requirements

The requirements below are a guide; a minimum specification for running IRIS on a dedicated server with 1-3 users. The more applications running on the server and users you have on the system will affect performance.

For example, for 5-10 users, double the specification below; for 10-20 users plus, quadruple the specification and so on.

We are happy to provide advice on this subject, however, we recommend that you speak to your usual IT service provider.

IRIS does not recommend the use of a wireless connection and any troubleshooting needed will require a wired Ethernet connection.

VPN

It is possible to use IRIS over a VPN connection BUT only when used with Terminal Services or Citrix.
IMPORTANT: Using IRIS over a VPN connection without a Terminal Server is unsupported and IRIS offers no guarantees it will work.

Internet

Certain features of IRIS Accountancy Suite (notably Filing by Internet to HMRC and Companies House) and online technical support assistance require a broadband internet connection.

Note: Certain features of IRIS Accountancy Software, including AutoMail and Company Secretarial, require Microsoft Word.

IMPORTANT: Please also be aware that cloud based office programs, such as Office 365 which is a click to run application, are not compatible with IRIS Software.

Adobe Reader DC

Note: Adobe recently provided an updated version to Adobe Reader DC.
This version of Adobe Reader does not allow PDF's created by IRIS to be viewed correctly.

Virtual Environments

Citrix/Terminal Services/VMWare/TS Remote Apps.

We do not test our products in any of the virtual environments listed above. Many customers use these environments without a problem. If you do come across an issue, we will try and help you narrow down the area in the virtual environment that is causing the problem but do not guarantee resolution.

Exchange

Running SQL Server and Exchange on the same server while possible is not recommended as it may impact the performance of IRIS Accountancy Suite Software

Anti Virus and Firewall Protection

Open

Some anti-virus software or firewall protection may prevent successful installations of IRIS software. In some cases the anti-virus or firewall software may need to be disabled while the installation is run. If you require assistance with this, please contact your anti-virus or firewall software supplier.
