Problem

When working though the FPS submission wizard user gets the following error:

Full Payment Submissions Errors were identified while building the submission file do you want to view the error log now

If the user clicks yes they see similar to the following:

Invalid characters in employee address. Field must begin with a letter or number and only contain the following characters

Resolution

Due to a change in the FPS information required from HMRC every FPS you send will now include the employees address as held in payroll. Previously we only needed to send the address if it was changed since the last submission.

The affected employees as seen in the error log will have a single space with no other text in the address line as identified in the error log. This space was probably always in place but hasn’t been exposed to the validation until now, as previously, the software hasn’t had to send the address information.

In order to correct the problem and send the FPS you simply need to delete the spaces in the affected employee address details, specifically the employee and address line specified in the error log.

Remember – While a space in between words in the address lines is acceptable, a line containing ONLY a space will cause the validation to fail.

Click “Yes” when you see the message to view the error log:

IPP InvChFPS 3 | FPS Error - Errors were identified while building the submission file

The error log will tell you the name and employee number of the affected records that need correcting.
