When using Office 2016 installed as part of Office 365 the following error can occurInstance of WORD is not running - create a word instance
Resolution

Click-to-Run is the technology used to install Office 365 subscription and most other Office 2013 and Office 2016 products. Windows Installer technology (MSI) is used to install the volume license editions of Office, like Microsoft Office Professional Plus and Microsoft Office Standard. Click-to-Run products also only take up about half the disk space of normal products. Office Click-to-Run products also use Microsoft virtualization technology that stores Office 201X in virtualized application space. This virtual space separates Office 201X from the regular file system and from the other applications on your computer. This separation lets Office 201x coexist together with any existing version of Office that is already installed on your computer. There are also other benefits to Office Click-to-Run. To use IRIS with Office 2016 you must install Office 2016 using the MSI installer.

Please run through the below guide on the user’s computer to fix these issues. The first few are usually the main culprit, but do check after each one if the problem is resolved as only in extreme cases will you need to do the whole thing.

For the registry fix step, click here. Click where it says ‘Open With’ and choose Download. Extract the files and choose the correct one (32bit or 64bit) and save to your desktop, and run. That completes that step.

Please be aware that click-to-run versions are not supported by IRIS, but if you are using click-to-run, there should be an option to install the files locally. Please seek professional IT help for any further queries on this.

This error is caused by a left over registry key if you have downgraded your version of Microsoft Office e.g. Office 2013 to Office 2010 or if a more recent version of Office has been installed for temporary purposes. Then the entries in the registry still point to Office 2013 which is no longer installed. We suggest doing a manual reinstall of Office by following this link

If this has been done and the error persists then the only option will be to re-image the machine to remove all traces of Office.
