It has been identified that when trying to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Mangement 2008, the following message appears: The SQL Server 2005 Express Tools are installed. To continue, remove the SQL Server 2005 Express Tools.
Resolution
This error occurs due to the SQL Server 2005 Express Tools not removing correctly. Following the steps below may help to resolve the issue
Try And Uninstall SQL Server 2005 Management Studio
Click Start, click Settings and then click Control Panel
Click Add/Remove Programs
Click Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio and click Remove
Alternatively, renaming the registry key for SQL Server 2005 Tools will allow the newer version to be installed.
To Rename The SQL Server 2005 Tools Registry Key
Click Start, click Run, type Regedit and press Enter
Locate the key for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools.
For 64 Bit Machines
The key is HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\SHELLSEM
Right Click the key specified above (SHELLSEM) and choose Rename
Type Old and then press OK
